Thinking About Entrepreneurial Ecosystems, Convergence, and Context: We believe that examining the concept of the entrepreneurial ecosystem, understanding how that concept is used and consumed, and grasping the dilemmas that compel large businesses to pursue digitalization can offer important insights into digital transformation.

Today, every type of organization—profit-seeking or nonprofit, public or private—talks about digital transformation. People born after the emergence of the internet shop on Amazon and Alibaba, use Uber and BiTaksi, and bring different expectations to the organizations they join as employees. Their expectations of organizations are changing more broadly as well. Businesses, however, are often unable to respond to such demands for change even at the relatively slow rates to which we are accustomed (Kelly & Amburgey, 1991). In a post-COVID-19 world, digitalization no longer appears as a gradual, long-term transformation but as an immediate need for rapid change (Faraj, Renno & Bhardwaj, 2021). Will COVID-19 eventually disappear through vaccination, immunity, and medical interventions, allowing us to return completely to our old lives? Or will mutated viruses continue to return in waves, or temporary immunity force us to transform fundamentally how we live and work? Will crowded concerts, hours-long in-person meetings, and dense urban living give way to a lasting new normal of less densely populated, more rural lifestyles, with entertainment, work, and loved ones accessed through electronic channels? We still do not know what lies between these two extremes.
