This page describes the courses and highlights selected components of their most recent syllabi.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<article class=\"dt-course\" id=\"bus103\">\n<p class=\"dt-info\">BUS 103 \u00b7 Fall 2026 \u00b7 Principles of Management<\/p>\n<h2>Principles of Management<\/h2>\n<p>An introduction to managerial work through planning, organising, leading, controlling and corrective action. The course places the human dimensions of managerial judgment at the centre of technology-driven and AI-enabled organisations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"dt-callout\">\n<p><strong>Distinctive learning design:<\/strong> Before class, students undertake 30\u201345-minute AI-guided tutorials and prepare short independent Weekly Learning Memos. Their work becomes the starting point for in-class discussion, contrasting interpretations and managerial decisions under uncertainty. AI supports learning but does not replace the student&#8217;s reasoning.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Experiential component:<\/strong> Students observe a rehearsal and concert with the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra to develop context-sensitive judgment about leadership, trust, coordination and communication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dt-small\"><strong>Assessment:<\/strong> Midterm 30%; tutorial\/memo\/discussion cycles 30%; final 40%; optional leadership-observation assignment up to +5 bonus points.<\/p>\n<details>\n<summary>View thematic course outline<\/summary>\n<ul>\n<li>Managing today and the historical roots of management<\/li>\n<li>Management environment, organisational culture and global context<\/li>\n<li>Managerial decision making, planning and goal setting<\/li>\n<li>Organisational structures and human resource management<\/li>\n<li>Individual behaviour, work groups and teamwork<\/li>\n<li>Motivation, leadership, trust and managerial communication<\/li>\n<li>Control, operations, change, innovation, ethics and social responsibility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"dt-small\">The current full syllabus includes weekly topics, readings, AI tutor modules, an observation assignment and a Learning Memo template and rubric.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<\/article>\n<article class=\"dt-course\" id=\"isl374e\">\n<p class=\"dt-info\">ISL 374E \u00b7 Fall 2026 \u00b7 Management Engineering Design I<\/p>\n<h2>Management Engineering Design I<\/h2>\n<p>Co-taught with Prof. Mehmet Er\u00e7ek, this course covers systematic product design and development: observing customers, articulating needs, developing measurable specifications, generating and selecting concepts, building and testing prototypes and refining designs in light of user, technical, manufacturing, environmental and economic evidence.<\/p>\n<div class=\"dt-callout\">\n<p><strong>Semester design project:<\/strong> Teams investigate and redesign an existing product used in accessible real-world settings in Istanbul. Decisions must be justified with direct observation, user interviews, benchmarking and successive concept and prototype tests rather than preference alone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The course uses workshops, field inquiry, peer critique, patent and prior-art searching, computer-aided design, design for manufacturing and environment (DFM\/DFE), experiments for robust design and product development economics. The focus is on evidence-based decisions in uncertain startup settings, not on treating the business plan as a static deliverable.<\/p>\n<div class=\"dt-callout\">\n<p><strong>Distinctive learning design:<\/strong> A dual-project structure combines a class-wide project addressing the needs of a real community with entrepreneurial team projects. Students compare outputs from ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, make explicit decisions to accept, modify or reject AI suggestions, and explain the evidence behind their judgment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The weekly class design combines foundational knowledge, collective project work, coached team-venture workshops and synthesis and reflection.
